I am planning to be aboard the John W. Brown for the Oct. 16th cruise along with my son John. I would love to meet any and all of you that will be aboard also. I will be wearing my "Armed Guard, Murmansk Run" hat, so let's get together. I have shipped ahead a box of my books "Frozen Fury, The Murmansk Run of Convoy PQ-13" that will be available in the Ship's Store, so those that are interested can get a copy there. I hope many of you will be aboard also. Let me hear from you. John
Hi Mr.Haynes My name is Tracy.I have in the past months started doing research on the Murmansk Run. I realize your post is 5 years old now but I am hoping you are in good health and able to help me. My Grandfather Louis C.Jones was on the SS John W Brown and from what we have found out so fair in 1943-1944.We found a beautiful watch among some things after his death in November 2015 with the following engraved on it U.S.N.A.G 1943-44 MURMANSK RUN 2 L.C.J the front is red and white with CCCP in the face and a around piece that moves. If you can tell me any thing about the events that accorded and how or why my grandfather was given this it would be helpful. I will be going to get your book asap.
Thank you and all the MEN and women that have served are country. Tracy.
I met John and his son during the Living History Cruise aboard SS John W Brown, on which I am a volunteer crewman, on Oct 16. It was a gloriously sunny, cool day, although later in the afternoon the wind kicked up to uncomfortable levels. John was really looking forward to the air show during which the ship undergoes a mock attack by enemy planes. Turns out John was with the Armed Guard for one voyage, then went into naval aviation. And now he's an author: something of a renaissance man I'd say. But anyway, it was my pleasure to meet John on this occasion.
