Every thing happened so fast. By March 30, 1942 we were in Murmansk harbor trying to fight off the German bombers to get to the quay to offload our war materials for Russia. During the next 29 days we were under constant air attack and a number of ships were lost in the harbor or at the docks while unloading. Our gun crew was credited by the Russian Government with shooting down 3 enemy bombers. We departed Murmansk Apr. 28 in Convoy QP-11, still under constant attack en-route to Iceland, finely arriving in New York on May 30th.
Quite a baptism of fire for a green recruit.
