My war, as I think of it, was the second world war, but I also served on active duty for a time in the Korean War; my father served in the first world war, and his grandfather with an Illinois regiment in the Civil War, in which Kents wore the gray as well as the blue. Kents in colonial North Carolina helped to drive out the British. If your recent experience piqued your interest in the Civil War, I suggest you read at least two works that you will more than likely find fascinating: any of Bruce Catton's many books, especially the trilogy, and Shelby Foote's three-volume account. Both write with grace and love of the language, one from a Northern perspective and the other from a Southern. -- Fran
