with pride this mantle of heromanship.
It’s all such a sudden honour, there’s me all my life trying my best
to steer clear of any hero making situation. In fact even as a teenager
my priority was to avoid the army, so at seventeen there I was standing
there in my sailor suit. And I might add, breathing a sigh of relief.
Not for me wearing those big boots and matching up and down with
rifles and stuff.
And I didn’t like the type of person I’d have to mix with, not the cream
of society by any means and much below the calibre of navy personnel.
And those big army boots! not like the top quality navy shoes I was issued with- and when I wore a white silk scarf with my navy overcoat I considered myself the cat's whisker.
I successfully failed to be hero when sailing the Atlantic and the South Pacific and finally got though the war without a scratch.
I’m sure you other fellows are true heroes and I await your tales of
daring-do with bated breath.
