Unfortunately I cannot confirm the copyright status of the photograph of MARINE FALCON on the Armed Guard / Merchant Marine website, even though I am the webmaster.
To explain, I became webmaster in June 2007 when the founder and original webmaster of the site, Mr. Tom Bowerman of Anniston, Alabama, became too ill to continue in that role. Mr. Bowerman died later that year. At the time I became webmaster I received from Mr. Bowerman only the electronic files that constitute the website. I did not receive any original images, documents or other source material, nor any documentation that would speak to sources or copyrights. I have no idea of the source of the photograph in question or whether it is the public domain and, if it is not in the public domain, I have no information on who holds the copyright.
I will refer you to a photography company, Atlantic Fleet Sales, that has original images of many vessels, primarily U.S. Navy vessels, but which also holds a photograph (although not a very attractive or charming photograph) of MARINE FALCON; see http://atlanticfleetsales.smugmug.com/Photography/Troop-Transports/22190747_Q9wc8G#!i=1772145189&k=HtRHXKN. The photograph is available for sale at very reasonable prices of $4.00 for a 5x7 and $8.00 to $12.00 for an 8x10. Whether purchasing the photograph also allows one to use the image in a publication is not clear. Please see the company's website at http://atlanticfleetsales.com/. At the very least, as a photographic company that presumably has to be sensitive to and knowledgeable about copyright issues, the company should be able to advise you on copyrights, at least with respect to the image of MARINE FALCON that they own.
Good luck.
