Re: Who unloaded ships when no long shore men were there? The average pay of a ship captain/
Cargo was offloaded from ships taking part in amphibious operations by the ship's company and troops from Army units already ashore. The ship's cargo booms were rigged out to bring the material up out of the holds and transfer it to landing craft that carried it in to the beach. I watched this taking place at Gela and Licata, in Sicily, and on the west coast of Italy, at Salerno. How much a ship's master was paid, I have no idea, but I expect it wasn't nearly commensurate with the expertise required and the risk involved. -- Fran
