MANILA -- Norway, one of the largest merchant ship operators in the world, has agreed the use of armed guards aboard its ships transiting areas prone to piracy.
The move follows trial runs of private armed guards on Norwegian-flagged ships since 2011, which saw a decline in pirate attacks on its ships.
Norway, along with the rest of the European Union, employs around 50,000 Filipino seafarers out of the 400,000 deployed globally.
Norway remains committed to supplying a naval presence off Somalia as part of the international anti-piracy task force.
