I would guess that the SS Permanente that you refer to was the converted Victory Ship launched in 1944 rather than the original SS Permanente launched around 1910 as the SS Ancon, sold to Kaiser around 1939 or '40 and converted to a bulk carrier to carry cement between California and Hawaii (later to American Pacific bases during WW II. Is that right? Did you sail out of Redwood City? Was your cargo cement or perhaps gypsum?
