Ron - I think you found him! It would be George A. Gagnon (middle name was Albert). As a kid, I remember him trying to pronounce 'Bartholomew'. His parents were French Canadien & he had trouble pronouncing the 'th' sound. I think the information about it being an Italian ship was an error provided by a family member. The stories behind the James Guthrie coincides with the family's recollections of the event. He was a gunner (not sure which ship-maybe both) & was told they hit a mine. The rescue ship could not get close enough but tossed lines out for the men to grab. Thank you so much for the info.
