Liberty [ports: ah, a dozen sailors probably would have their own “favorite several!” And, it all had to do with what the sailor was looking for. Trouble was usually the one thing Navy people wanted to avoid – until, of course, the ubiquitous “Texas Bar” got to rumbling and the Shore Patrol arrived. My top five ports were: Barcelona, Spain; Portsmouth, UK; Amsterdam, NL; Kiel. GE and Hamburg, GE. Helsinki, FN was a great port – if you go there during the 6-week summertime; and Copenhagen vies for top status, as well. Of ”Navy towns,” San Diego has to be the best, although NYC and Boston are super. Subic, Olongapo, and Saigon were reported to be – well, anything one could imagine – and any Ozzie port was fair dinkum. Steve in PA PS: I hear that Murmansk nowadays is a decent visit!
