My hat is off to anyone who survived a voyage to Murmansk, or Archangel. I was lucky enough never to have been assigned to a ship fated to run that perilous course. I certainly wouldn't have volunteered. For that matter, I knew no one in the A.G. who ever volunteered for anything, including assignment to the A.G. As I remember it, we just went where we were told to go and did what we were told to do. All of us. When we lugged our gear up the gangway of a ship we had no idea what its destination might be, although the nature of the cargo being taken on could provide a hint. Amd if LCMs were being secured on the weather decks, we had a pretty good idea of how the cargo would be discharged.
