My Grandfather, Bob McHugh Sr. was a 20mm gunner on the Nathaniel Alexander during the Murmansk run in Sept. of '44. He went with our family to see the John W. Brown in Providence. I would like to thank everyone who he encountered on the Brown (especially the man aboard who gave him his Armed Guard ballcap when he found out he was an AG)for treating him with such reverence and respect. He was extremely embarrassed by all the attention he received but I could tell it meant a lot to him. He doesn't consider himself a hero but he is to all of us in his family. One side note: When my Grandparents arrived back home my Grandmother happened to look at a document on the wall noting the date he crossed the Arctic Circle on the Alexander. It just happened to be the same day, Sept 24, that he was on the Brown, 66 years to the day.
