PQ-13 Contact

This morning I had a most delightful phone conversation from England with Austin Byrne, a British Navy gunner on the British merchant ship SS Induna during the voyage Convoy PQ-13. We shared many of the same experiences, except his was far more traumatic in that the Induna was sunk by U-boat, U-376, and he spent 4 days in a lifeboat in -20 deg. weather before being rescued by a Russian minesweeper and taken to a Murmansk hospital. My ship, the SS Eldena, came through hardly a scratch, only a few bullet holes from being strafed by a dive bomber. Austin is the only person I have been able to make contact with that was in the same convoy PQ-13. I look forward to many more communications with him. John
