Our duties in Ship's Company was to either march or drive returning sailors to their assigned barracks. It was GREAT duty!. We were on duty eight hours and at least 32 hours off durimg which we could as we pleased.
Once I and a few other swabbies went to San Jose and ended up in a bar drinking some beer. All of a sudden a bunch of SPs came in and checked IDs of everyone there. I was taken to their HQ because I was UNDERAGE in that bar! You had to be 21 years old and I was not quite 20!!!!
They kept me four hours and I signed a release form. They then took me to the bus station where I returned to Shoemaker. I had the duty and was an hour late getting back, PLUS I was wearing my dress blues.
Our Commander was VERY understanding and "allowed" me to stand my "watch" in dress blues. It was a VERY LONG eight hours!!
On 2 April I was discharged and headed back to Indiana and I'm still here! Thank God!
