Back in October of 2008 there was a ceremony at Loch Ewe, Scotland, honoring the people who had sailed in the Arctic convoys. Several countries, including Russia, sent representatives, but only a few convoy veterans were able to attend, including Spud Campbell, the radioman on the Liberty ship Henry Bacon, the last ship sunk by the Luftwaffe in WWII, about which I posted on this site a few months ago. In June of 1944, my ship showed up at Loch Ewe on its way to Russia, but British engineers in inspecting our ship found that our boilers were too risky for the Arctic and we went around to the east coast of England and unloaded. In any case, the Normandy invasion had cancelled all Russian convoys for a couple of months.
