Roy, I was on the Liberty ship Henry Ward Beecher in Leghorn at Christmas of 1944. We had several air raid alerts but no attacks at the dock area where we were unloading as I recall. We were worried because there were hundreds of bombs lying on the dock when we arrived and nobody moved them while we were there! It seemed as if the Army was more worried about a possible German breakout at the front like the one going on in Belgium at the time. It was my first trip on the Beecher, but she had been in the Med several times before I joined her in November of 1944.
