...names like Van Valkenburg , Fieberling , Swenson and so many others which deserve contemporary, and lasting, recognition as well as a nod to what should represent national pride.
Do ANY--rpt ANY--of the current political names assigned to a flattop rate the honor and respect Fieberling--to take but one example--earned the moment he departed Midway northwest bound with his 6 TBFs on the Fourth of June ?
This naming of flattops--scarce as they are coming to be--after US presidents has become a grotesque absurdity. Considering the times, I can see the FDR--but once scrapped....
With so many points of pride and history to hand-- Wasp and Yorktown , anyone?--the idea that any carrier ought to be named after politicians in general and presidents in particular strikes me as 100,000 tons of stolen valor.
Unfortunately, Shelley's Ozymandias may provide a glimpse of the future.
