The closest analogy to this that I know of comes from this site's numerous discussions on ship's names. The Naval History and Heritage Command has a really good article on the subject. The SecNav has naming authority, and one of them did not like ships with Native American tribal names, so he renamed them. He was only in office about six months, and his successor then put the names all back.

While no president has ever been concerned enough about how ship designs look, a number of them have interfered in naval construction matters considerably. Run a search on presidential interference in navy construction. I got James K. Polk, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodoore Roosevelt as the top results. Franklin D. Roosevelt had the most influence (fortunately a positive one) on the composition of the Navy.
