i think that would be US intelligence.NOT ALLIED, the RN had been fighting them since 1939, and whilst initially surprised by the performance, found adverts for them in JANES AWA, and rapidly learned about them in combat!
a simple counter was a bow chaser gun on coastal escorts and lots of MGBs.

Reading a book now on naval intelligence ops during Operation Husky and authors describe German E boats as “experimental” and that Allisd intelligence knew little about their specifications, which I have a hard time accepting, especially in the late summer of 1943.
What did the Allies really, and when did they know it?
