Of course Benjamin Franklin was one of the major figure of the US Declaration of Independence because he was the man that decided King Louis XVI to sign the Treaty of Alliance with France in 1778. (One of the very few wise decisions of King Louis XVI!)
What is interesting to know is that still many ships of la Marine Nationale are named after soldiers that fought during the Independence War: Latouche-Tréville, Suffren, La Fayette, De Grasse, Guichen and long ago Rochambeau.

Not to forget Beaumarchais,(famous for Le mariage de Figaro) who acted as a secret agent for King Louis XVI to help the Insurgents, and sent large quantities of weapons, powder, etc... to help for the rebellion against England.

Thanks. The USA gained its independence with the help the French assistance. François Joseph Paul de Grasse landed French troops and defeated the English at the Battle of Chesapeake, thereby cutting Cornwallis ability to supply his army by sea. Cornwallis, already heavily besieged by Washington's colonial army, reinforced with French troops, was forced to surrender, ending England's attempt to suppress the revolution. Previous Message
