
That seems likely, thank you. Low pressures in the Northern hemisphere rotate counter clockwise. The wind likely started from a different drection, then shifted in a fairly short time frame. And, repositioning during it would be hazardous. So, they just rode it out that way.

I would expect that if the anchorage allows for it, they would bring their bows into the wind. Always more stable that way.
Maybe they were already anchored by both bow and stern?

Why are they almost all crosswise to the wind? I thought ships at anchor would naturally swing into the wind? And if they're not anchored (and presumably not adrift) then why have they chosen to be crosswind? Any old salts here who wish to enlighten us?
