USS President Adams (AP 38) Photographed from USS Wasp (CV 7), at Noumea, New Caledonia, 4 August 1942. She is crowded with U.S. Marines, bound for the invasion of Guadalcanal. USS Quincy (CA 39) is in the background. Note President Adams liferafts, landing craft and climbing netting.

Here is a document I came across at NARA with color samples. As you see the colors are gray, Dark Gray for decks and Slate Gray for vertical surfaces), but my camera didn't do a good job of capturing the "shades". This memo was dated in February 1942. Plenty of time for changes. I have read elsewhere that many times merchant ships painted in various shades of gray.

Looking at David Doyle's heavily illustrated book on these ships show varying "paint".
Some shots show dark deck and superstructure compared to the hull. Others show deck and hull colors with no contrast.
Did they bother to paint these vessels in "Navy schemes"?????
