As I noted, I think this is prewar. No AA gun in the Wintergarten, and the number is prominent. So, I am not thinking a wartime photo.

You have basically confirmed what I had found out.
I was aware the the U-40 was sunk early in the war and probably still carried both her deck gun & net cutter.
I was hoping someone would have come across a definite date for when these items were removed from the U-37 - but as indicated in your research it seems like no-one knows.
I also concur that the camo scheme depicted on the Mirage\WCM kit is from her Atlantic patrols. Perhaps I will build her with this camo and deck gun, but no net-cutter.
