Question about paintwork of HMS Hood summer 1940

These are fairly commonly shown photos of Hood at Gibraltar ca. June/July 1940. I have always been intrigued by the apparent wear on the hull paint. Was she in 507C or 507A at the time? Her upperworks look like 507C. If so, why was the hull 507C wearing down to 507A? Wouldn't the wave action affect the paint nearest the waterline first? Stumped.
