In early 1942 they were certainly faster than California and West Virginia, which were resting on the bottom of Pearl Harbor but I tend to think the rest of the big five were somewhat faster. As designed, the Rs were faster than the Big Five but between the wars the USN spent much more money on their modernization and refits than the RN did on the Rs. The RN just did not have the money for the Rs, which were the red headed step children of the RN.
