In most articles, I have read, it is stated that the Mogami class and the following class will replace the Abukuma class DE and Asagiri class DD in the secondary District Forces (apparently soon to be re-organised) - and to increase the number of ships in these "two number" Escort Squadrons.

The ships of the class already in service are part of these Escort Squadrons, Mogami and Kumano e.g. belong to the 11th Escort Squadron in Yokosuka.
