The Iowa class were armed 9 16inch guns in 3 turrets. When they fired the guns they worked on a principle similar to a musket load the shell and then put in gunpowder bags close the breech and then aim and fire.
After the turret explosion in 1989 on the Iowa and loss of life I hear that navy developed a 13 inch diameter shell that was more of a cartridge(gunpowder in the shell).
Were these used by Missouri and Wisconsin in the 1st Persian Gulf war or was the older system still in use? Thanks in advance.
