I met Loren when he was a recruiter for the Navy while at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons station in Southern California. I donated some 1/72 planes for a restoration project he was doing on a 1/72 Nimitz that he used to take around to events and I got to go on the base. I ended up helping with some of his smaller restoration projects.

He gave me a watertight door from one of the Tora, Tora, Tora BBs that were rotting on the base. I don't know what happened to them. He showed me his model of the USS Vogelgesang (DD-862) before he took it to England and won a Best of Show medal, at that time the first ship model to do so. It had one of his first efforts in etched brass; bicycles used by the crew and radars that rotated using watch gears.

Loren was a true gentleman and I believe his etched brass sets helped revitalize a dying hobby of ship modelling. He will be missed.
