"I had a choice of weapon and I chose the older, closer-range, Mark 8 torpedo because it had a bigger warhead and therefore a better chance of penetrating the warship's armour plating and anti-torpedo bulges - good WWII stuff; that isn't in the design of ships these days."
After two hours of working its way into an attack position Conquerer fired three Mark 8's at 18:57Z, at a range of 14K yards. "The object was never to hit with all three but to fire a spread to cover any inaccuracies in the fire control solution."
Two hit and General Belgrano ex USS Phoenix, though heavily modified, sank in freezing miserable seas 250 miles south of the Falklands approx 45mins later with the loss of 368 of her 1,042 crew members.

I have never seen this photo before. On the far left is USS Arizona burning out of control. In the middle is USS Solace (the white ship). At the bottom is USS Vestal. And on the right is USS Phoenix preparing to sortie.
This is the best overhead shot of her that I've seen so far. You can clearly see that her #2 turret top is painted white (it also has two willow green stripes over the white). She was part of CRUDIV 9.
I believe she was the 3rd ship within CRUDIV9 so her #4 turret top would have a blue square over a white border.
I still find it amazing that the Japanese completely ignored her. She was a very large target sitting out there all by herself.
