I don’t think they want to be ruled by anyone. But I do know that they are basically broke and heavily dependent on foreign investment and are probably more than a little worried than the Danes might someday bail on them, like the did on their slave colony in the Caribbean when it was no longer profitable after all the revolts (known today as the US Virgin Islands!) So they might start cutting deals, especially if China just wants some uninhabited fjord to build a naval base. Maybe the Danes are too ashamed of their colonial past to be more assertive in Greenland’s affairs and prevent that from ever happening!

And why do you think that Greenland wants to be ruled by a brutal dictatorship? They know China (and they know the US social system compared to the Danish one). The poles in Greenland are clear. They do not want to be part of China (or the USA).
When Trump would be interested in the security, he could work with the NATO allies. He could have reverted the US retreat from Greenland (the drastic reduction of US troops on Greenland in the last decades). Greenland is part of the NATO and is protected by NATO.
The Danish military invests heavily in its polar capabilities (in contrast to the US) - see my list of ships.
