In 1943 six of the Fletcher class destroyers were intended to be modified as seaplane tenders with the addition of a crane and catapult installed in lieu of the aft torpedo tube bank. They could also use a Vought OS2U Kingfisher as a scout airplane, but in both cases the idea proved to be impractible and the three destroyers such modified reverted to their original fit.
