new spotting a/c were being introduced in 1944 so someone thought they were usefull, radar can do so much but eyes on is still best!as for closing as close as possible without to much danger is always best

Iwo Jima is a volcano and has no shelf around it. LSTs had to keep their engines running to stay on the beach. Any ship can close the island much closer than 7000 yards.
