Reworking hulls of one class to be an "out of class" ship is nastier than you think. Use the kits on the market.

I am looking to build the battle line at the start of WWII. Do to my skill level and general clumsiness I prefer to work in plastic not resin. My question is that due to similarities between the ship classes is it possible to use the hulls of the models available and my swapping turrets, barrels, superstructures, and fighting tops with aftermarket, 3d printed parts etc. could I build the ones not on the market?
