There's a perspective cross-section through the flight deck structure on Page 72 of John Robert's "Anatomy of the Ship" book on Intrepid which shows the tie-down strips being the same thickness as the wooden deck (three inches), and presumably three inches in width as well. The actual width of the strips is unfortunately not mentioned anywhere in the text, but between 2.8 and 3.2 inches seems like a safe guess.

The Historic Naval Ships Association used to have a pretty in-depth period document on fitting out the Essexes years ago, but unfortunately, I was dumb and didn't save it before they removed the Documents page from their site.
