In my opinion, the darker part of the hull above the false bow wave is due to shadow from the hull flaring out in this area. If you look at the rest of the hull aft, it is also lighter than what you are seeing above the bow wave.

The measure 5 false bow wave on Indianapolis is not just a white "wave" painted over the 5D hull. Clearly there is a different color underneath it. Any idea what color that is? Looks a good deal darker than the supposed 5S of the the DMs. Could it be 5N? Previous Message
There are 2 photos of USS St. Louis berthed at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard in 1941 wearing MS-1/5 camouflage. These photos show her at berth B-21. She arrived at this berth on 10/2/41 and left that berth on 10/9/41.
These 2 photos also show USS Breese DM-18 and USS Montogomery DM-17 berthed at B-18.
Both Breeze and Montogomery are wearing MS-1 camouflage.
But if you take a closer look at the port side hull of USS Breese (the ship on the right), you can see a bunch of scaffolding hanging on the hull.
This next photo was taken on 10/10/41. In this photo, USS Indianapolis had just docked at berth B-21 and USS Raleigh is building up steam to leave berth B-17. Indianapolis is wearing MS-1/5 camouflage and USS Raleigh is wearing MS-1 camouflage. Just ahead of USS Raleigh, we can see USS Breeze and USS Montgomery at berth B-18.
If we zoom in and take a closer look at Breeze and Montgomery, their hulls are no longer painted MS-1 (5-D).
Just a small portion of USS Breeze's bow appears to be still 5-D. The rest of it has clearly been painted a different color.
In my opinion, we are looking at USS Breeze and USS Montgomery transitioning from MS-1 camouflage to MS-11 (overall 5-S) camouflage.
If that is the case, then this is the first two examples of 5-S paint being applied to a ship at Pearl Harbor.
The next two ships (that I'm aware of at this point) to receive a MS-11(5-S) paint job were USS Raleigh and USS Detroit.
