I was researching for some exact information on two of the Iowas and was reffered to A.Toppan's 'NavWeaps' pages and I simply used:[green dye bag BB-64] You can read about the Iowa-class 16"/50 (40.6 cm) Mark 7 here:http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_16-50_mk7.php
Scroll down to 'Ammunition' and read about the 4X dye colors #2a.
BTW, there is also a 'NavWeaps' data page on the ''14"/45 (35.6 cm) Marks 8, 9, 10 and 12'' guns with 'Ammunition again listing 'dyecolors' :
Nevada - Orange, Pennsylvania - Red, New York and Texas - No dye
I was surprised to find the ammunition dye colors for the Iowas.

Reading an Exeter survivor account of Java Sea and he mentions Houston used dye colored shells. Other instances in WW2 where the US used them?
