The only Type XXI kits I know that your friend might have possibly mistaken for the Mirage 1:400 version is either the AFV Type XXI or the older Dragon/DML version from the 1990’s. Both kits were in 1:350 scale.
As you mentioned, the Mirage 1:400 line has other U-boats, but no Type XXI kit is listed nor seems to ever have been available.

Yes, but not their Type XXI subs... I have all I would wan from their other U-boat sets.
