I started using GMM in 1984. At that time I think Lauren Perry suggested you just clean them in mineral spirit or a strong detergent soap like Dawn. Rinse with clean water and then just paint them. I use enamels. Acrylics could be different. I don’t use them much. The things I do is try not to handle them much. Keep your hands clean. Occasionally, you have to touch up the ends where you cut them. But I’ve never primed any of my PE. I generally just hold the whole sheet and spray it with whatever colors the lightest in the camouflage scheme. I don’t recall if I’ve ever experienced the paint flaking off.
