However, I am also reading that tariffs are being collected. I think the key to Hannant's confusion here lies in their statement that they have to charge and pay direct to the American authorities. That should not be. From how this looks to be set up, their shipping service (Royal Mail, DHL, whomever they use) are actually responsible for making the payments. So, if they will huddle with their shipping services, that might help them clear up some confusion faster. They can set their payment collections up based on what their shipping charges end up at. They'll wind up needing to set themselves up with a table that lists kit, country of origin and tariff rate. That can help them anticipate what their carrier service will be collecting, so they can charge accordingly. They will ultimately probably be setting themselves up with a brokerage service. They fill out forms, and help determine charges, etc. I don't know about the Royal Mail, but entities like DHL, etc. have brokerage services, and according to one poster below, UPS just used their broker service and put those charges into the shipping costs they billed a sender from the UK, without consulting him, nor allowing him his own broker choice, etc. The shipping services are being burdened by most of this for this category of importation method.
With these ebay sellers in China it is generally a little easier. Most sell only one type of product, thus having only one merchandise type, and their country of manufacture is their own country, so they've just the one tariff rate. Ebay in China is set up with one shipper...Orange Connex. So, they've each gotten set with them on shipping charges, and Orange Connex's brokerage. I am sure that made things a bit smoother for them. Yes, for an entity like Hannants, this is not going to be as smooth at all.

(Shows just how confused things are, even for one of the largest UK model retailers !!!)
We have just been told we have to charge tariffs on orders going to the USA from September 1st.
The last date for tariff-free despatch is August 29th. Though this could change and become earlier.
It seems that we have to charge a % tariff which varies according to the country of origin of the kit. So for Airfix some kits are made in England so we would charge 10% (we think) and some are made in India. We do not know the tariff rate for India. Anything produced in China we think is 25% but do not know for sure because we have not been told the rates yet. We also have to pay direct to the American authorities buy do not have any bank details nor do we know how the payments will get matched to the parcel.
We already provide a similar service for Norway, New Zealand and Australia so a lot of the information we already have but significant changes will have to be made and until we know what they are we cannot do much.
The information we have received is vague but it will be several weeks before we can alter our invoicing system. So we will have to close our website to orders from the USA until we can make the required changes.
Please send your orders as soon as you can.
At the moment it is impossible to know how long this situation will last.

Customers in the UK will be charged the first price which includes tax. Customers outside the UK will be charged the 2nd, usually about 20% lower, price.
There is no tax on books so these prices will be the same. All prices shown are United Kingdom (UK) retail prices in Pound Sterling (GBPs).
Overseas customers will be charged in GBP's but receive their bill in their local currency.
