Peter,
I have a few of the kits myself. The Mirage kit is a copy of the old MachPlast kit. Later reissues of the Mirage kit came with a new resin bow and photoetch railings. As Craig Bennett points out the kit has the bow for the 1st group of the 'U' class with 6 torpedo tubes forward, two external tubes above the waterline and 4 tubes in the hull. HMS Upholder was from the 2nd group. The 2 external tubes were deleted but the bow still had a cutdown 'bullnose' profile.
As for the markings I have found many photos showing Royal Navy submarines carrying the conning tower markings including Upholder. For the most part the markings are quite prominent. Upholder's N99 appears to be 'subdued' as in not being so bright. You will also see that Upholder's name is also on the conning tower as large metal letters not just painted on. I am including drawings and an image for you.

Hi: I'm currently building this kit and a few questions.
What were her colors in:
A: Outside Brest 1941-2 (patrol against a possible sortie of the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau & Prinz Eugen.)?
B) 1939 Atlantic?
C) in the Mediterranean? I'm assuming it would be Mediterranean Blue topside and red lower hull but with or without a black waterline???
Also, the kit comes with a large decal for the conning tower with her name & pennant no... but I'm assuming she shouldn't be carrying this or any other ID marking while on patrol?
The Mirage kit is very vague about her colors.
Thanks for reading
