Fairly well documented in Constantine Pleshakov's "Stalin's Folly" The First 10 days. His other book "The Tsar's Last Armada" a good read too.

One of the most momentous days in Western history. Stalin's initial paralysis cost the Soviets dearly. A dramatic series of 'what ifs,' played out over the next six months, still occupies historians today.
