I think those losses were greater material losses than the more famous losses of Royal Oak and Hood. Either or both operating with the Home Fleet would have freed up the Illustrious class carriers for service in the Med or Eastern Fleet in the critical years 41-42. They were no older or less protected than Furious, which gave good service well into 1944.
