As Ryan said, they are primarily judging craftsmanship by the model builder. It’s not unusual for the model builder to have a much better historical understanding and records of the actual model.

The judging criteria are fit and finish above anything else. Historical accuracy really doesn't come into play unless it is a gross inaccuracy or 2 models of equal merit need some sort of tie-breaker.
