The IJN's love affair with multifaceted Cunning Plans. So often demonstrated by 1944 that it's no wonder Spruance refused to pursue the IJN carrier fleet at Philippine Sea. His object was to protect the invasion fleet and the beachhead, and he feared an end run.

As for walking into a right hook, maybe, but the sheer amount of luck enjoyed by the US played a large part in the battle. Which does include, to be fair, that the Japanese failed to fully concentrate their available forces on the key objective. Previous Message
