Interesting, thank you. I did not know this. As far as I knew, the Flight IIIs are scheduled to do this mission. Turns out, the cruisers are falling apart faster than "scheduled," so there's a gap until the Flight IIIs appear in numbers.

One of the few differences between today's cruisers (CG) and destroyers (DDG) of the US Navy was that the cruisers could serve as air and missile defense coordinator.
Now, that capability was added to USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) to fill the gap left by the retirement of the overaged Ticonderoga class cruisers:
