One of the few differences between today's cruisers (CG) and destroyers (DDG) of the US Navy was that the cruisers could serve as air and missile defense coordinator.
Now, that capability was added to USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) to fill the gap left by the retirement of the overaged Ticonderoga class cruisers:
