The
revised edition of Friedman's "US Destroyers" will get you well into the Zumwalt program in two new added chapters, and touch on the origins of the LCS in the last few pages. That was current when it came out in 2004. As you will see from the book, since the end of WWII, destroyers and destroyer escorts solely have composed our surface forces. And, since the Zumwalt, there's only been the new frigate and early development efforts on a new DDGX, and there is lots online about them. So, the book actually then pretty much covers US development to date. Other navies are another story, and don't necessarily parallel ours. Unfortunately, I don't know of books for them, however. Not my desired focus.
