The two mounts are definitely NOT the same. There are appearance similarities because they are in the same "generation" of mounting. The mounts on the St Louis class were true DP mountings, and were internally more closely related to the later twin mountings on just about everything during WW-II than they were to the Porter/Somers class mounts. The Porter/Somers mountings were low angle only, which is why about half of the two classes were extensively (and expensively) rebuilt in 1944/45. St Louis's guns remained unchanged through the war. Seen head on, the biggest difference on the St Louis mounts and the later twin mountings was the rounded transition from the turret tops to the turret sides (but not front or back). The Porter/Somers mounts were not quite as tall, since high elevation was not needed. The guns didn't have to be loaded at extreme elevation, and so the trunions were not as high. Previous Message
I am not speaking of the guns themselves but turret shape. Don’t know the MK number of turret but they do look similar between Porter and Helena. The reason I ask I have the Midship Helena kit and the CW kit of same. The turret shapes vary in each kit and I am not satisfied with appearance and shape of them. I am debating buying the turrets from Model Monkey of the Porter/Somers Class DD if they were same turret type. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
