If firing from gun plot on a shore target, for example, that's where gun orders would originate. Director would be free to watch for counterbattery, etc. In antiair/surface, if the MK 25 radar or director optics were tracking, then mount(s) would be slaved to director. And they also have local control. (52 + year memory test...)

Just saw some artwork that guns on Sumner Class destroyer are firing to starboard and the MK-37 is facing forward. Would not the MK-37 track with the guns?
