There were 4 ships named USS Intrepid and 3 of them were small or auxiliary ships:
1798: an armed ketch
1874: an experimental steam torpedo ram
1904: a training and receiving ship
1943: an aircraft carrier
Not really a consistent use of a name. Adding the DDG, the only consistent aspect is the lack of consistence. Compare that e.g. with HMS Warspite, HMS Valiant etc. - over centuries only among the most powerful fighting ships.
