From an Associated Press story published today in the Orange County (CA) Register: Warren Upton, the oldest living survivor of the 1841 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the last remaining survivor of the USS Utah, has died. He was 105. He died in a hospital in Los Gatos [San Francisco Bay Area) after suffering a bout of pneumonia.
Upton had swum to Ford Island as the Utah capsized from its two torpedo hits, avoiding strafing by hiding in a trench until rescued by servicemen in a truck. The article concluded by stating that there were an estimated 87,000 US military personnel on Oahu on the day of the attack, but today there are only 15 still living.
